De troost van vreemden

Voor iedereen die nog bang is om zijn netwerk open te zetten voor anderen, lees het artikel op Wired.

And yes, if someone did commit a crime using my network the police might visit, but what better defense is there than the fact that I have an open wireless network? If I enabled wireless security on my network and someone hacked it, I would have a far harder time proving my innocence.

. The RIAA has conducted about 26,000 lawsuits, and there are more than 15 million music downloaders. Mark Mulligan of Jupiter Research said it best: "If you're a file sharer, you know that the likelihood of you being caught is very similar to that of being hit by an asteroid."

en om je weer aan twijfelen te brengen:

To register with fon, you just need an email address. Its easy to get anonymous emails or enter fake informations.

FON does not check that data. There is no guarantee, that these are correct.
Even if fon wants to help in an legal case -- they are are just unable to do so:
they do not analyze or even log your "guests" activities
because how the route works, it is impossible to determine (or log), if you or the guest were doing bad things.

Therefore you are in a bad situation if someone accuses you of e.g possesion/downloading illegal informations, and maybe doing a complete search of your property.

They told you, they'll help you, and despite that they cannot, do you have a guarantee? Fon is not really famous for its response time in customer service.

Conclusion: Only if you know the risks, and know, that you take this risk on you, you should operate a Fonrera.
